SRI BODHIRAJA FOUNDATION
Embilipitiya Sri Lanka
The
Sri Bodhiraja Foundation is based in Embilipilitya, the hometown of founder Ven
Sobhita Thero. The Foundation started out with the main task of addressing the
difficulties faced by people living in the area, and to improve their lives
through a diverse range of religious and social programmes.
Since
1960, the village of Embilipitiya and its surrounding areas have been inhabited
by groups of people from various parts of the country. Although the government
had implemented some development projects under the Udawalawa and Mahaweli
schemes, living conditions in the area remain sub-standard, especially in the
fields of education and health. Malaria and malnutrition are among the most
severe problems, and many young people are unemployed.
The
heart of the Sri Bodhiraja Foundation lies in the Bhikkhu Training Centre which
serves as a focal point of worship for the people in Embilipitya. Every full
moon, more than 2000 people congregate here for religious services. Below the 28
Buddhas Pagoda is a well-equipped air-conditioned meditation hall which can
accommodate 100 people. Among the many projects slated for completion in 2003 is
a preaching hall which will serve as a study centre for the monks and a
sanctuary for devotees who wishes to practice their 8 or 10 precepts.
